Kitchen Kings is an initiative run out of The Culinary School and started by Bashar Krayem, a prominent Western Sydney entrepreneur. Bashar is the driving force behind numerous hospitality brands under The Culinary Group umbrella, including Eighteen22 Casual Dining, The Baking Factory, and soon to be launched Pizza Pasta Grill and Once Upon a Ramadan.

Over five weeks, the King Kings program provided 10 boys an immersive experience into the world of hospitality. Bashar mentored each participant by providing an opportunity to learn a range of culinary skills and develop valuable business skills. Ultimately, Bashar wants to give the boys a viewing glass into what it takes to operate a successful restaurant and cafe. He also hopes to break down barriers and the stigma associated with working in the kitchen by promoting accessibility and confidence in sharing their love of food.

Bashar says “One thing that always surprises me about the hospitality industry, is the boys who avoid it. Our young men who don’t view this space as one they can grow from or create a future in, partly attributed to the deeply rooted conception that cooking is a feminine trait.”

The boys battle out for the opportunity to run Bashar’s own establishment, Eighteen22 Casual Dining for one week. In addition, the winner will be awarded a one-year scholarship to The Culinary School. The program not only provided the boys with technical and business skills, crucially it will contribute to their personal growth by testing their resilience and persistence to inspire the boys to pursue their dreams in the hospitality industry.

Bashar defines Kitchen King as one who “acknowledges and respects the original masters of our trade and understands that the conception which drives so many of them away, should be our source of strength and inspiration.”

The Kitchen Kings themselves were handpicked by Bashar as boys who have shown a keen interest in the hospitality industry and are facing personal challenges such as bullying and/or struggling academically. But, this course is not a walk in the park, Bashar teaches each of the boys that the hospitality industry is challenging as much as it is rewarding.

He says “the ever-changing hospitality world is a profession of resilience and innovation, a trade that can never be perfected without passion and dedication to the culinary arts. It’s the early mornings, the late nights and back breaking hours and unfaltering commitment, all things that make or break a Kitchen King.”
